Statement
My painting explores image and appearance but also the foldedness of painting, where a suggestion of enfoldment and unfolding occurs. In my work, the image comes to occupy a trajectory rather than being perceived as a fixed point in space.
I work from images sourced from the Internet, or personal photographs, using digital imagery, which for me acts as a kind of proto-painting. Through the effects of pixilation and the printing process, the image suggests its translation to the stuff of paint. I approach the painting firstly in a photo-realist and representational way. I then apply dragging techniques, pulling and pushing paint, causing ruptures in the surface and creating a dislocation of place.
My work is situated on the threshold between abstraction and representation and is concerned with the dynamic interplay between appearance and material processes. I also use geometrical abstractions within the work as a way of trying to understand and internalize perception and experience, whilst reflecting on a sense of modern day anxiety.
